Jail Scene
(Jason Stinly is hanging on a fence. Just looking out into the distance, he is a prisoner at a state penitentiary He has been there for several years, and it seems he will be there for several more. By the look in his eyes you can tell he is saddened; he seems to be concentrating on something really hard. Nate walks in, entering from stage right. Nate enthusiastically walks over to Jason as if all the feeling and emotion had been taken out of him over the past 4 years. Nate puts his hand on Jason’s shoulder; this startles Jason and breaks his concentration.)
Nate: What the hell Jay, You’re acting like you are about to get locked up (sarcastically laughs at his own joke.) You’ve kind of been hanging to yourself today, it’s a big waste of time although we have plenty to spare. (Once again he laughs at his own joke sarcastically.)
Jason: As a matter of fact I was thinking about cutting the time here short by a few years.
Nate: (Realizing how serious Jason really is) Jay, this place isn’t maximum security, but it’s not minimum either, You gotta be stupid to even think you could get out of here, and even if you do, they will find you, and then you WILL be in maximum.
Jason: Its been done who knows how many times before me, and to me, that says it can be done again,
Nate: So what, based on the fact that it has happened before, with no knowledge of exactly how these events took place, you are coming up with an escape plan fueled on hopes and dreams?
(Jason shrugs his shoulders)
Nate: (Sarcastically) Wow…that is truly wonderful, sure you can count me in, but while we’re at it, let’s make some nice big signs that say I really want to stay here a few more years in big bold print.
Jason: Do you know why I’m not excited anymore? Because I realized something...I realized that I don’t have a 4 year sentence, I don’t even have a 5 year sentence, It is not even an 8 year sentence, You know how long my sentence is Nate??
(Nate trys to get some words out, but he is interrupted by Jason)
I have, a ten year sentence, meaning that I still have 6 years left, that also means that I am not even half way done with my time here, but then I came up with an idea, till end my sentence early I can make it out of the country and then get on a boat to Jamaica, then instead of worrying about making the wrong person mad, I can be lying on a beach, Instead of eating the same tasteless food everyday. I could eat what ever I want, and to me one of the choices I have in front of me sounds a little better.
Nate: Why are you telling me this, If I turn you in, they will probably take time off my time here…
Jason: But they wont take near as much time as I will. I am telling you, because I want you to get out of here too, you and me are in the same boat, the only difference is that you have 8 years left, and I have 6, and I just figured you would like to get 8 years of your life back, cut my 4 years have lasted a lifetime, and I know that you are seeing the same way as me.
Nate: Your little “perfect fantasy” is cool and all, but we don’t know enough about this place to get out, and lets say we do get out, they will be looking for us, and it isn’t easy for wanted men to cross a border out of the country.
(A bell rings and every one slowly starts to walk inside Nate starts to walk off too, but Jason grabs his shoulder and stops him.)
Jason: Fine Nate, if you want to be called 5086 for another 8 years, be my guest, but as for me, my name is Jason Stinly not 5447 and I’ll be georged if I go by that number for another mouth. Because I will leave this place sooner then expected it’s just up to you to tag along.
(Jason heads to the door with the other prisoners, Nate pauses and thinks hard for a second, and runs after Jason until they are side by side. The End.)
