Crow's Nest
Setting: The crow’s home, a nest far up in a Jack Pine, located near a small town.
Time: 1936
(Elora has been kidnapped by Syrus and she has just found out that Syrus has planned for her to wed his youngest son.
Elora: That won’t do, I can’t just marry your son. I’m supposed to choose from a number of suitors. Besides, he’s a crow, and I’m a young lady, how’s that supposed to work out?
Syrus: That’s none of your concern my dear, and you don’t really have a choice. It’s already been planned. All the guests have been invited and we wouldn’t want to disappoint the guests now would we?
Elora: But really sir, my father will be very upset. He’s been waiting on me to choose a husband for weeks now.
Syrus: Well, that’s just too bad, he’ll have to just forget about you because you’re going to live with my son, Titus.
Elora: No, I won’t do it!
Elora rushes to the edge of the nest and springs from the side, over the edge, Just as quickly, Syrus rushes upon her, catching the folds of her dress just before, she repeats “Never” several times. A few minutes late she awakens to her mother’s voice in her head. But as she opens her eyes, she realized that she is still with Syrus. He has tied her leg to a branch sticking through the side of the nest. She struggles with the knot for a while, but it holds firm. She finally collapses to the floor, sobbing.
Syrus: Now, now, dear, don’t cry, you’ll soil that beautiful face of yours before the wedding.
Elora: SHUT UP! Shut up! (Still sobbing, she tries to be sincere) Please, just let me go.
Syrus: Do you never dream of better days than those spent pleasing your father?
Elora: (She stops sobbing and sniffles a few times) What’s that supposed to mean?
Syrus: Just what it sounds like. You’ve spent all your childhood sheltered from the world and all the time your father was the only many in your life that you were close to. You’re only afraid of committing to someone else because you know he doesn’t really want you to leave him.
Elora: Shut your mouth, that is entirely untrue!
Syrus: Believe what you may child, but only you can cut the ropes that bind you.
Elora: If you think you know so much about me, then why would you force me to marry someone against my will?
Syrus: I also want only the best for my son, and you are just that. You need someone who won’t hold you back and Titus is the one.
Elora: If I agree to meet him, will you at least me speak to my father, so he doesn’t worry?
Syrus: That may be negotiable.
